The Agile Paralegal
A paralegal is in essence a project manager. A person who has the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time without losing focus on the sole purpose of the task at hand. Pulling all the pieces of a puzzle together while being laser focused. This has never been a small undertaking and never will be. Even with the advances in technology a paralegal will still need to harness the necessary skills to master the role without burning out while doing it. Courses abound about how to do the job better, quicker, and with less resources. A roadmap on how to do the job always changes because the law, technology, and the tools to complete different tasks change. While continuing education allows a paralegal to stay in pace with these changes it becomes a challenge to stay abreast of all of these changes while working. Time is money and the time spent learning how to use a new feature or function is time away from fulfilling the responsibilities for an employer or client.
What if there was one technique, one method, one methodology, one set of tools that could be applied to any scenario that required change? Any feature change, any change to the law, any change in job duties. No this is not magic formula, but once this roadmap is used it can be reused and reapplied over and over again to whatever situation that occurs in a paralegals job. What is this secret paralegal weapon? It is becoming an Agile Paralegal. Huh? You Say! What does being flexible and doing back bends have to do with getting my job done other than setting myself up for a sexual harassment allegation. Agile has nothing to do with your physical flexibility but with your mental astuteness. The ability to apply concepts, techniques, tools, and methods in a systematic way in which to get to a desired outcome. Think of it like this when you go on a trip you don't just get up one day and Wholla! your in the Bahamas. It takes planning. It takes following a guide or map. It takes packing. All of these steps are part of the process of getting to the Bahamas. That's what Agile is. It is a methodology that stares change in the face and says I am ready for you. I have what it takes to meet this challenge head on. It's a set of tools. It's a mindset. It's what being a paralegal is all about.
